What You Need to Know to Hatch Chicks

Grown Chicken

About Us

My name is Mary, and I teach second grade in Charlotte, Nc. My experience with chickens started in March 2020 with the beginning of the pandemic. Originally slotted to spend my Spring Break at the beach, my plans quickly changed. Instead, I spent the week helping my dad build his chicken coop in his backyard (pictured on the left with an addition). Soon after the completion of the coop, my parents had their first, sweet chickens. It was a great project, and my parents loved having fresh eggs.

When I began the next school year, I was ready to try hatching chicks in the classroom! With a masters degree in science education, I realized the power of such a project. Not to mention, the project aligns so well with our standards and is a wonderful way to get all children engage and excited about school!

I am still currently hatching chicks in class on a yearly basis. Each time, we learn more, and the excitement never waivers. Lucky for me, my parents willingly house the chicks after we hatch them (in their new-an-improved large coop!).

It’s a project you’ll remember for ever.
